How does one go from lots of production into research?

I've done years and years in tv and film production covering many roles from production sec to 2nd AD to floor managing and prod coord and I'd LOVE to move into casting/vt research but every advert wants at least one credit. Chicken and egg situation. Should I offer to trail a bit? I've worked alongside casting researchers but how to get a break... Grateful for kind answers!
