I am currently working primarily in documentary on a range of projects from international feature docs to environmental films and current affairs or investigative documentaries for BBC South East. I bring a combination of personal and cinematographic skills and life experience that works well in a wide range of documentary situations. I have very good sequence building and lighting (including the creative use of available light) skills and a wide knowledge of cameras and digital formats. I am confident at recording sound and have very good interviewing skills when needed. I work as a cinematographer, shooting PD or shooting AP on appropriate projects.I have a friendly, flexible approach but a strong drive to capture the spirit of a story. I have shot in in a wide range of situations and locations and lived in the Middle East and Caribbean. In my overseas work, several of my projects have involved finding and filming communities that are hard to access.I enjoy lighting and work creatively and quickly with a combination of natural and available light and additional lamps so am very open to work that uses these skill areas and perhaps requires well lit interviews or drama sections.I started my career as a union apprentice and worked my way up through the camera grades on feature films, commercials and at the BBC. I then studied cinematography at the Royal College of Art, where I won the Kodak commercial cinematography and Metz 35mm film drama awards and shot six award-winning films.
I taught and made films whilst bringing up my family and am now returning to shooting full time.
I have also exhibited photography internationally and taught cinematography at the University of the West Indies, Barbados, and Abu Dhabi Women’s College, United Arab Emirates and have recently authored Introduction to Cinematography: Learning through Practice for Focal Press; winner of the Taylor Francis Best New Textbook Award in Arts and Humanities 2019.
