With a passion for the oceans and a talent for engaging people of all ages, Russell makes his presentations fun and relevant by combining his enthusiasm with up-to-date science.With TV appearances on Sky News Deep Ocean Live, Channel 5 Saturday Show and as a commentator for the 5Spike series Outrageous Stunts, Russell was also featured on the Discovery Science quiz show Codebreakers and acted as a consultant for the BBC Radio 4 series Natural Histories for which he showcased one his favourite animals; the octopus.With a history of performing at UK science and music festivals across the UK, Russell has begun branching out internationally, with a 5-week speaking tour across the USA and speaking dates in the Netherlands, Portugal and Poland. Having witnessed him speak at the Telegraph Festival of Education, Microsoft Skype invited him to join their roster of education ambassadors allowing him to easily reach people across the globe; to date he has appeared “digitally” in schools in 18 different countries ranging from the USA to Thailand.Currently a marine biology researcher at the University of Bath, Russell’s specialism is in plankton; microscopic organisms that inhabit the world’s waterways. Prior to this, he obtained a first-class Master’s degree in Oceanography from University of Southampton and worked as an oceanographer before becoming a Physics teacher. Combining these skills paved the way for Russell to become a presenter for the marine education charity Incredible Oceans for which he performs at schools & festivals alongside his life-size inflatable orca.As an ex-teacher, Russell maintains an interest in education, both formal and informal. As well as training other academics on how to speak to diverse audiences about their research, Russell is also on the Board of Directors for the European Marine Science Educators Association, helping support the community of ocean education professionals across Europe and beyond.As well as the marine environment, Russell maintains a strong interest in Physics and Astronomy from his time as a science teacher. Combining these interests together formed the basis of the “Exploring the Deep: Ocean vs Space” presentation Russell gave at TEDx Bath.With a record 12 million tons of plastic waste added to our oceans annually, Russell is keen to highlight the plight of the marine environment. An avid beach-cleaner, Russell aims to lead by example while informing as many people as possible about the state of our oceans; by bringing together fun, enthusiasm and up-to-date research, Russell hopes that more people can learn about our blue planet before it’s too late.
