I’m Matt, an Assistant Producer with a preference for aquatic-based productions - I’ve got an academic background in marine biology, I’m a rEvo diver, freediver and I’ve got my HSE part IV, but my real USP is aquarium work.

Incorporating some tank-based shoots into your production can give a unique perspective on animal behaviour and allow you to film things that are prohibitively expensive or sometimes not even possible with a dive team without putting both the crew and animals at risk.

I'm a little different to some other APs in that I've worked directly with a lot of animals in public zoos, aquariums and even on a 125m super-yacht; I’m very comfortable in the water but I know how to get the best out of an aquarium-based studio setup. I’m well versed in acquiring the animals, keeping everything healthy on set, eliciting natural behaviours and finding somewhere for the animals to go afterwards. I can design and build the tanks, sets and life support systems around the script, storyboard and ideal behaviours which gives the production more creative control and flexibility, but also saves a fair bit of money.

When it comes to animal welfare, I know what I’m doing to ensure the animal’s needs are met and I’m a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), so I’m up to date on the latest developments in welfare as well as the legal obligations associated with transporting and keeping animals.
