Roland Arnison completed the Africa Media Wildlife Documentary Filmmaking Internship program in September 2017. As the course field specialist, I worked very closely with him, and am pleased to write this testimonial for him. The course is a month-long intense program during which students learn camera operation, filming and editing techniques, how to create narratives for wildlife documentaries, and how to produce a wildlife documentary. Students complete a final project that they create, write, film, and edit.
Right from the start, Roland showed an infectious and keen enthusiasm for wildlife filmmaking, and was quick to pick up the taught material. He progressed very quickly on each of the tutorials, growing more confident and skilled with the camera. He filmed and edited a number of short tutorial films, which showcased his improving ability.
The final project on which he worked was a short five-minute documentary entitled “Walking with Elephants" which followed his goal to find and walk with a family of wild elephants on a reserve. He showed great enthusiasm in presenting his own documentary, and he proved to be a natural in front of the camera. He was comfortable talking to camera, and being able to think quickly when the action was taking place. This short documentary highlights his capacity to become a wildlife presenter, as well as his production skills.
Roland is also an exceptionally pleasant person and hard worker, and worked well with the other students on the program. His positive attitude, willingness to learn, and his engaging personality made him a very enjoyable person to be around out in the field.
I am confident that Roland has a bright future ahead of him in the wildlife filmmaking industry based on his performance on the course and that anyone would benefit in having him contribute on a project or in an organisation.
