From 2021 to 2023, I was staff at VICE World News where I was the lead producer on three of VICE's hit series: Investigators, Developing News and System Error. Produced 20+ episodes. With over 25 million views, the episodes have been some of the most popular across VICE’s YouTube channels.
I filmed and produced the 2020 BAFTA-nominated documentary 'Growing Up Poor' for C4 Dispatches. I am skilled at navigating sensitive issues and working with people in difficult circumstances, especially children. I am experienced at finding excellent contributors and developing compelling and moving stories. I am confident at negotiating difficult access, with experience working with police forces (Thames Valley Police Major Crime Unit, Police Scotland) schools, foodbanks, mental health charities, hospitals and homeless shelters.
As an experienced investigative journalist with strong research and open source intelligence skills, I have worked on investigations for BBC Eye & BBC Arabic and won competitive reporting grants from National Geographic, the International Women in Media Foundation and One World Media. I was also named an IWMF Grantee of the Howard G. Buffett Fund in 2020 and longlisted for a One World Media Award in 2021 for my reporting on women in post-revolution Sudan.
I have reported from towns across the UK, as well as Sudan, Somaliland, Uganda, Lebanon, Colombia, India and northern France for The Guardian, VICE Impact, Broadly and Ms Magazine.
I am a confident and creative self-shooter (Canon C300, Sony FS5). I have filmed for BBC Panorama, Channel 4 Dispatches, BBC Three and the Channel 4 BAFTA-nominated series 'Catching a Killer'. I have experience remote directing dozens of international shoots. I have lots of experience in the edit for BBC Three, Channel 4 and VICE World News (FCP X, Adobe Premiere).
In 2019, I was a Finalist in the Joseph Rowntree Foundation x The Guardian Pitch at Sheffield Doc/Fest. In 2018, I was named a ‘Rising Director’ by the Indie Training Fund and given funding to make a short documentary about debt-bondage in the UK and race, which premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June 2018.
I graduated with an MA in Arabic and International Relations from the University of St Andrews in 2016. I am fluent in English, French, and Spanish and I have a good command of Arabic (Modern Standard and Levantine). www.alicerowsome.co.uk
