Since graduating, I have completed work experience with Nine Lives Media, a BAFTA and International Emmy winning production company. During this time, I assisted with administrative duties around the office and became proficient at time coding and transcribing video content. As well as this, I was recently invited to visit the set of The Crown Season Four to shadow the director Benjamin Caron. Here, I was able to learn more about the responsibilities of being on set from the perspective of the director and production assistant, as well as having the opportunity to shake hands with Gillian Anderson! The level of research and detail within every shot was incredibly inspiring and confirmed that I would love to gain further experience working in television dramas.
I have also completed work experience as a Production Coordinator for BBC Radio North, where I supported both live and pre-recorded broadcasts by booking studios, greeting guests and assisting production teams on programmes such as You and Yours, In Touch, The Verb and Pick of the Week. I coped well with the pressures of administrative and organisational responsibility, and this experience gave me the assurance that I can learn quickly and perform well in new professional environments. I developed strong organisational skills in this position and my success in this role allowed me to return as a Freelance Production Management Assistant. Here, I assisted on Radio 4’s Brain of Britain, by holding telephone auditions and shortlisting candidates for the next series. I also worked on Pick of the Week, where I assisted with the organisation of the programme by finding audio from Highlander software, emailing producers to find additional audio, as well as clearing programmes for copyright, and completing clip and music reports for the programme. In my current position of Shift Leader, I have developed a strong ability to stay calm under pressure and effectively deal with difficult situations, while still providing a high level of customer service. Day to day, I am in charge of twenty-four staff members, independently running shifts and making sure everyone is working to the best of their ability and reaching their targets. I believe balancing this full time role while using my holiday days to complete relevant work experience demonstrates my commitment and enthusiasm to work in the television and media industry. Despite this being an incredibly scary and uncertain time, it is now clear to me, more than ever before, that this is in industry I would love to work in. Television is where so many of us are turning to during this unsettling and stressful time. In moments of boredom or fear, television provides an essential escape which many of us can reach in the safety of our homes. As an essential worker currently isolating alone, I am not only inspired by the escapism that television can achieve, but also the connections and conversations between families and friends that have been created as we all discuss our new favourite series that we can watch together despite being apart.
