Alicky always gets all the cut-aways I need to cover a sequence in an edit and clearly takes time to get them as each shot is always beautifully composed. She always asks contributors just the right questions to elicit the perfect answers we need from them. She's great at directing talent to maximise their potential. She is amazingly quick to write thoughtful, engaging and witty commentary. She's calm under pressure and above all, fun to be around in an edit suite.
Alicky has produced and directed two episodes of Horizon since I have been Editor. The first was about obesity and the second about the hair care industry. The first film was one of the strongest performing episodes of Horizon during the 2016 run (at the time of writing the second film hasn’t TX’d). Alicky is very strong journalistically – something that is at the core of every episode of Horizon, is great with contributors and particularly good with presenters – in fact both films (Obesity and Hair) had either very inexperienced presenters or presenters completely new to television. Alicky worked closely with the presenters – getting great performances and helping them grow as on screen talent. Alicky is a very strong director and can adapt her directing style to suit the subject of the film. The Obesity film was a presenter led ‘journey’ style whereas the hair film was more of a magazine format – I was equally thrilled with both and know she has made many other films across a wide variety of subjects with different styles. Alicky is very self motivated and can be completely relied upon to understand a brief and deliver to it – though with her own characteristic flair. She is a great team member and always full of creative ideas and solutions to problems.
I have been lucky to work with Alicky on a couple of occasions; both times cutting prime-time hour-long television documentaries for the BBC.
She is a first-rate director/producer and this is for three categorical reasons.
Firstly, her sequences are well covered and thoughtfully planned for the edit. Her rushes are beautiful and have presented me with all of the options which I could need as an editor.
Secondly, she writes well and is readily capable of negotiating tricky subjects with a lightness of touch. What is more, she comfortably handles the several rounds of viewings and changes which these sorts of productions invariably require - guiding her films through final post with confidence and ease.
Thirdly and most crucially, Alicky is a fun and warm hearted presence in the edit suite. She is a pleasure to spend time with. Her intelligence and easy manner ensures that the environment in the cutting room remains positive and productive at all times.
I highly recommend Alicky and hope that an opportunity to cut together comes about again some time.
