My track record spans TV and non-broadcast projects for formal and informal learning, community development, the arts/heritage sector, and general audiences. I specialise in Black history revealed through compelling human stories - I'm passionate about human stories revealing Black Caribbean heritage and folk-culture in particular: a compelling story is the bottom line, but what drives this interest (especially in terms of my factual experience) is the opportunity to offer a new and/or neglected perspective that sheds new light on the story we think we know.
(examples here - http://www.sweetpatootee.co.uk)I have a broad base of skills and experience in story/people finding, development, and, setting up/working with UK & International fixers, crews, contributors, locations and archive – this includes securing access, assisting with location filming, interviews and dramatic reconstructions.I am a creative self-starter, organized and proactive – able to work under my own steam whilst meeting the needs of the team. I have good written and journalistic skills, good general knowledge of international events and characters that have shaped the world we live in today (18th century to present), and a nose for new and compelling stories, facts, perspectives …I specialise in efficient and accurate research (concise or in depth as required), identifying and bringing together archive sources; be they community held, published works, private collections, academic libraries or national institutions. I am very strong in building and managing relationships with local, national and trans-national project networks – working from a desk and/or traveling. And I have a wide database of international contacts reflecting my special interest in bringing diversity to the mainstream.
I believe my Black Caribbean Eastender upbringing has developed my outlook as a people person with a passion for discovery, the arts, inclusive history, human stories and storytelling. Banter and stories arising from ordinary everyday encounters are probably my favourite recreation. I’m an avid reader (broad spectrum of fiction and factual).
