Mark Roberts is a supremely talented recordist as well as a hugely likeable person. Production teams, crews, talent, contributors and sound designers alike all enjoy working with Mark due to his skills, patience and total professionalism. When you are on location in remote difficult places, Mark not only does the best job but also ensures the team are able to do theirs. He can bring a production to life.
If someone says sound recordist, I think Mark Roberts, as he exemplifies how to do the job. He brings real craft to his work, he is both technical and creative. He always finds a way to get the audio no matter how challenging the circumstance. And he is a real pleasure to have on a shoot too.
I have known Mark for almost twenty years. We worked together on many of the BBC expeditions where I was Series Producer and Director- Amazon Abyss, Expedition Borneo, Lost Land of the Jaguar and Lost Land of the Volcano. These were observational expeditions set in very remote places with often very challenging conditions to live and work - basically mud and torrential rain. Mark's sound was always completely first class and he also had the ability to fix and sort kit in the worst places. But far more than that he was also totally solid in every way. He dealt with medical emergencies with calmness and kindness - for instance when a colleague suffered a broken ankle in the most remote place imaginable. He was always wise in his advice and solid in his support and he swiftly became the backbone of the expeditions. He's also lots of fun. I highly recommend him.
As a BBC producer-director I have worked with Mark on several challenging and exciting documentaries (in China, Russia, Panama, Philippines and elsewhere). Mark is an extremely skilled sound recordist always coming up with imaginative solutions to get the best sound possible. He is very personable and always gets on well with contributors. Mark is also a great team player, always supportive and resourceful. Of particular note is his knowledge of China and the language, which given the (frequent) difficulty in working in this country is an enormous asset. I recommend him extremely highly; I am always very happy to work with Mark.
I've worked with Mark in some challenging and remote locations for long trips (eg the jungles of New Guinea and the mountains of Bhutan). He's one of the very best sound recordists. He has excellent attention to detail. However arduous the shoot, however tricky the situation, Mark produces excellent results and he does it without fail and without fuss. He's also a wonderful person a great team player and incredibly good with contributors from all walks of life. He's thorough, professional, skilled and experienced whilst also being diplomatic, thoughtful and kind. He has a really good sense of humour which helps when the chips are down. He is solutions focussed and always had good creative ideas. He's my top choice and i wouldn't ever hesitate to recommend him.
