I’ve been a freelance producer-director/series producer since 2002 following work as a commissioning editor (history) at Channel 4 and as a producer-director and series/executive producer in-house at the BBC. Before getting into television I worked as a journalist specialising in media, design, advertising and architecture. As a producer-director I’ve had extensive experience across a wide range of specialist factual programming with a bias towards history and arts. I’ve written and directed large-scale historical dramas and drama-documentaries working with some great British acting talent. I’ve also directed ambitious music documentaries working with international singers and orchestras using live playback. I’ve worked extensively in the Middle East (Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt) as well as many other parts of the world. I’m HEFAT trained, a confident self-shooter and I have a great network of DOPs, sound recordists, editors, fixers, composers, archive researchers, graphic designers etc. who I’ve established long and fruitful relationships with over the years. In my role as series producer (which I like to combine with PD-ing) I’ve conceived, developed and overseen award-winning landmark series tackling some of the biggest of Big Subjects, from the history of photography to the history of God. I’ve worked successfully with high-profile presenters (Bettany Hughes, Simon Schama, Alan Yentob) and have also helped some (David Olusoga) make their TV debuts. Similarly I’ve collaborated with experienced directors as well as first-timers taking that challenging step up from AP-ing. I’ve managed co-pro/overseas relationships as well as all the usual budget, schedule, personnel, compliance and publicity issues. My strengths lie in being able to tackle complex and multi-layered subjects and turning them into enjoyable, intelligent, ambitious and stylish television. I’m good at getting the most out of subjects and locations, contributors and presenters, DOPs and editors, composers and graphic designers and I enjoy working collaboratively with execs and commissioning editors. I am regionally based (outside M25). I self-shoot (Sony FS7, Canon 5D mkIII) and self-edit (Adobe Premiere Pro).
