I have a keen interest in Radio/Audio and Sound which I discovered when I started
listening to the radio and a variety of podcasts. I enjoy listening to The Ricky Gervais show
because of its content and free flowing conversations between the three hosts. The use of
jingles and sound effects used on the podcast always did appeal to me as a listener. The
podcasts later turned into animation, which I found an intrest in. I prefer comedy and
podcasts that have guests on, that are interviewed by a host.
After the first lockdown I started volunteering as a radio presenter in a hospital radio called
Mid Downs Radio. During my time at MDR, I had my own Saturday sports show, where I
discussed everything involving local football, such as scores and fixtures. I learnt most of my
relatable skills whilst in the studio, how to open everything up and how to line up everything
for the next presenter.
After this volunteering experience myself and two friends began our own podcast. On this
bimonthly podcast of 12 episodes, we discussed current events over the period of April -
November 2021. These events ranged from entertainment news, political events and our
likes or dislikes. We used the software Audacity to record and edit our audio. The news or
content that was covered would be based on the main headlines of that recording week. To
prepare for these recordings, we would set up our mics, call via facebook and do a clap test
to sync ourselves in time. In the build up to each recording, I would read headlines from
newspapers to decipher what news article I would bring that week. The main skills I used in
creating this podcast was adobe illustrator to create our cover image, converting our audio
into mp3 files, setting up my microphone correctly and editing all the audio.
Most Saturdays I am a radio producer for a local station called SeaHaven, in which I produce
a breakfast and sports show. This involves me having to pre-plan out shows for each
weekend, using the myriad system, ensuring that the presenter knows what to introduce and
the layout of the show. My core responsibilities for each show are to update the football
scores via twitter and be able to work within a team to coordinate and ensure the show runs
smoothly. I also need to have great written communication when using social media and
emails.
Whilst studying my UAL Level 3 Diploma in Media Production and Technology course, I
learnt about graphics and a variety of adobe software. I was taught how to use Adobe
Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, in which I had to create a visit Brighton poster and an
infographic. I focused both these designs on Brighton’s local youth radio stations and on
Brighton’s radio history. For my research into Brighton’s radio history I searched a lot online
and went around Brighton itself. I made sure to include the main defining years and the
stand out ones, This showed the progression of Brighton's radio history clearly. On my Level
3 Creative Media course at Brighton MET I was, again, able to develope my photo editing
skills by using Adobe Photoshop when editing my photos I had taken. I learnt how to use the
basics of a camera to take certain photos, like architecture, people, shutter speed photos
and many more. My second project in college was to create my own podcast. This was my
favourite task as I got to combine my two interests of football and podcasts into one. I
enjoyed being able to use the podcast room on campus and all the equipment along with it. I
was able to use the RODEcaster and RODE microphone to record my podcast onto a
microSD card. I then used Adobe media encoder to convert my file into an MP3.
The finalpart of the project was being able to use Adobe Audition. I really enjoyed this process, as I
was able to adjust my audio, fade in and out sound effects and edit my podcast overall.
I enjoy playing cue sports, mainly, Pool and Snooker. I play pool for my local pub league
and snooker on the side in my spare time. I also enjoy reading autobiographies of
ex-footballers or managers.
I am currently working part time as a production runner in Soho at goldcrest prodctions through an agency & also do the odd bar work shift at my local pub. This line of
work has allowed me to build a great social aspect with my colleagues and with the different
clients I serve day to day. Through my experience of working production runner, I
have developed my communication skills through working with others to ensure that work is
completed correctly and in a professional manner
To conclude, I'd like to pursue a job in this industry because I have a key interest in all things
sound and production related. This course will allow me to gain the skills and experience I need to pursue my career goals.
