A North-West based cinematographer & self-shooting producer / director with 14 years experience in producing, directing, shooting, and editing short form films focusing on human stories and lived experiences, enabling those I film to share their stories through their own words.
As a self-shooting producer / director, I’m routinely involved in all aspects of the production process, including research, pre-production development, budgeting, on-the-day production, filming, directing, running interviews, editing and delivery. As a British Army photographer and videographer, I underwent intensive training in capturing both still and moving images, operating both independently and as part of a team, and taking responsibility for all aspects of production, shooting, and post-production, during which time I embedded myself within a wide range of units, recording life at the heart of everything the British Army does. This included action overseas and during demanding military training exercises, as well as ceremonial duties around the UK, including royal events and Trooping the Colour. In this role I was trained as a team member and team leader for a joint service news gathering (eng) team and was often required to work to tight deadlines, with limited resources, and produce final deliverables with a fast turnaround time.
Since leaving the Armed Forces, I have worked as a producer / director for a number of production companies. This work has often seen me working directly with contributors who are sharing sensitive stories about their lives and experiences, and I always seek to provide opportunities where they can tell their story through their own lens while maintaining adherence to the creative brief. I have worked directly with people sharing their experience with grief, trauma, combat, severe physical injury, abuse, mental health, and disability. This has led me to develop an empathetic approach, taking time to research and understand the contributor's experience, ensuring they understand the aims and purpose of the filming and any questions raised during the interview, and ensuring they feel comfortable not just while on camera, but at all stages of the production. As part of my continual personal development, I have undertaken training through forces charities in mental health first aid, and supportive therapeutic practices.
I have experience in all stages of the production process, including research, budgeting, pre-production / pre-visualisation, video editing, graphics, and distribution through a wide range of media channels, not only social and online but also working alongside museums and visitor centres to create media for display as part of specific exhibitions. I have a strong understanding of video editing principles as well as the technical skills to work in a range of editing software, including Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, and Avid.
I currently hold a B+E driving licence and enhanced DBS check for working with children
