Maria Julia Ferreira is a director, producer and editor from Florianópolis, Brazil. Her work spans political realism and women-centered narratives driven by deep internal conflict, as well as dystopian and gender-bending worlds that challenge conventional structures of identity and power. Her American directorial debut, Fear of Flying, explores dual universes through the lens of an older immigrant woman navigating grief, belonging, and reinvention. She has directed and produced eight short films across Brazil, Europe, and the United States. Maria is a Film & TV student at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, with international experience in filmmaking with people with learning disabilities in Scotland, as well as being an alumna of Kino Guarimba (Italy, 2023) and having worked at the BFI London Film Festival (2024). Her short YES, DEAR was nominated at Florianópolis’ largest horror film festival, Floripa Que Horror!, and ANNA’S BIRTHDAY won Best Short Film at FICIMAD Madrid (2024). Read Less
