Valeria Starovoit was born in Moscow and has many years of experience as a journalist and television producer. She has a strong passion for contemporary social issues, particularly those related to her homeland, Russia. Over the years, she has successfully pitched numerous story ideas (for Galileo on Pro7, Abenteuer Leben on Kabel 1, Discovery Channel etc), organized shoots both in Germany and internationally, and identified compelling protagonists and stories. After the successful completion of the major project Gödde goes… Russia (Pro7, part of a series featuring host Stefan Gödde) at Maximus Film, Valeria started working independently and spent several years as a stringer for Russian television channels. In this role, she coordinated and executed shoots for major Russian broadcasters. At the same time, she worked as an editor for MDR in the Heute im Osten editorial team.In 2017, Valeria directed her first documentary as an author (see filmography). The film Coming Out is available on the Radio Liberty platform and the television channel Current Time. She went on to direct documentaries since, the major breakthrough one being “Mail for the taiga” for ARTE (2021).  Valeria holds a Master’s degree in International Journalism (specializing in Television Journalism) from Westminster University in London, which she completed with distinction. She also earned her Bachelor's degree in Cultural and Media Studies in Bristol, England. Since January 2020, she has been furthering her education by attending a directing course led by a professor from the Moscow Film School (VGIK). Valeria is fluent in Russian, German, and English.
