A graduate of the BBC Drama Series Writers Academy, he’s written for EastEnders and Casualty, and until recently was a main writer on BBC1’s Doctors. His Charlie Kaufman-esque episode The Joe Pasquale Problem got record audiences, and was nominated for a Writers Guild Award.
He’s written sitcom pilots for BBC Comedy, Leopardrama and Bayamber, and been a finalist in the Bafta Rocliffe Comedy Forum and Sitcom Mission. In 2011 he won Shine Pictures' Big Idea science fiction prize, and he did rewrites on movie Breaking The Bank starring Kelsey Grammer, released in 2016.
His work for BBC Radio 4 includes Gondwanaland, My Difficult Second Album, Marathon Man, The Two Georges and The Last Minutes,as well of adaptations of A Farewell To Arms, Marathon Man and a high profile Christmas presentation of The Princess Bride. He’s currently adapting Walter Tevis’ The Man Who Fell To Earth, which will be broadcast in April.
Stage plays include Mad For It at Manchester’s Royal Exchange (nominated for the Manchester Evening New Theatre Awards), Dog Well Done (winner of the Amnesty International Theatre Award and Zimbabwe Boy for Flight 5065 at the National Theatre. As artistic director of Flight 5065 he filled the London Eye with comedy, theatre and music for a one night arts extravaganza. Artists included Damon Albarn, Jo Brand and the Royal Court Theatre.
Stephen has taught scriptwriting at University of Arts London, Central School of Speech & Drama. Norwich Theatre Royal, Arts Depot and Manchester University. He's worked in branding and advertising for clients including Cafe Direct and Fox Television, and in 2025 he scripted the Mozilla Rise 25 Ethical AI Awards, presented by BAFTA winning actress Siobhan McSweeney.
