I am confident sourcing stories, conducting interviews, self-shooting and editing news packages using software such as Premiere Pro. During my MA course, I prepared, edited and presented packages for weekly newsdays. I am invested in the news happening within communities and I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet a range of different people through my work as a student journalist. I covered a selection of community-led stories including the potential opening of a wind farm in the Calderdale Valley and events commemorating mining disasters in Salford. I liked that I was able to speak to people from the area and give them the chance to share their opinion on local issues.
I have completed work placements at 5 News, Hits Radio Newcastle and the Liverpool Echo. During my time at 5 News, I conducted interviews on behalf of senior reporters, sourced and organised interviews and acted as a point of contact between journalists and interviewees. While at Hits Radio, I was given the opportunity to cover stories on my own. I was able to attend the opening of the new Tyne and Wear Metro trains and interviewed North East Mayor Kim McGuiness. I edited a range of audio for Hits Radio which was broadcast. While at the Liverpool Echo, I went out into the community and conducted several interviews. I spoke to people struggling with drug addiction at a newly opened rehab centre. I found this incredibly interesting, and I was pleased that I was able to help people to share their experiences. I also covered the possible ban on smoking in pub beer gardens as well as breaking news stories. I wrote several articles which were published while working to strict deadlines.
I have completed SEO training and participated in a Google course where I learnt how to utilise platforms such as Google Trends to help to better understand which topics are popular amongst different audiences. I have experience of live reporting, presenting and creating clear and succinct pieces to camera. I have a clear understanding of the newsroom environment and have produced, written scripts and created social media posts for a range of different TV and radio programmes during my time at Salford University. I know how to use Adobe CS software, WordPress and Microsoft Word. I have knowledge of the Ofcom code and Media Law. I have passed my Media Law and Ofcom Broadcasting exams as part of working towards my NCTJ qualification.
