Current: BA in Film Studies at Kings College London. The course has already given us a deep knowledge and understanding of film, the societies that produce them, and the technologies and techniques used to make them. I’ve loved learning about films from the early 20th century through to the present from North America, Europe and East Asia – both popular and commercial cinema, and the avant-garde and underground - and how they relate to their historical context. I am particularly passionate about the transformative power of cinema, and its ability to represent marginalised voices and overturn damaging and restrictive stereotypes. I have taken multiple practical film-making modules over my time at King’s and made a couple of short films. I feel that this has enriched my understanding of the medium further, and provided me with an understanding of post-production, camera skills and editing techniques.
Work Experience:
Normal Life Pictures LTD (October 2024): Working as a Set PA on a short film. This provided me with first-hand experience on a film set, which I found extremely beneficial in acquiring practical filmmaking knowledge. This experience allowed me to discuss my career aspirations with other crew members and gain insights into the various roles within film production. This experience has been invaluable for my academic growth. It has broadened my understanding of film production, allowing me to approach my essays with a new depth of knowledge and insight.
The Bedlam Bunch Theatre Company: In between my university studies, I have been working part-time for a children’s theatre company, assisting with productions and managing their online advertising. The company offers theatrical entertainment for the children of office workers at their premises. I am in charge of erecting the set, ensuring costumes and props are all in place, assisting the director, and filming and photographing events - and am currently preparing a short trailer for the website. Working for the company has developed my organisational, production and communication skills.
Volunteering at the Toronto Film Festival 2024: Over the summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Toronto Film Festival. I was in charge of helping visitors at the festival and ensuring they had a pleasant screening experience; both members of the public, and press and industry. As part of my role, I was able to usher, which allowed me to witness some of the experimental and transgressive films screened at the festival. I found this experience extremely inspiring and look forward to going back next year to work.
Volunteering as a photographer for events at the Holbourne Museum, Bath: When photographing the museum’s events and exhibitions, I gained knowledge about the exhibition curation process. This experience allowed me to apply my photography skills in a practical setting, providing valuable opportunities to experiment with photographing exhibitions, events, and museum collections.
Barista & Waitress (various 2018-present): Gather café (Bath), Wawa restaurant (Tower Bridge), Nook café (Bath), the Queensbury Hotel (Bath).
