About Duncan McNab (UK & Australian residency/work) - CRIME EXPERT!!
Duncan McNab is an award-winning and bestselling investigative journalist, television producer and author of twelve books published by major houses in Australia, the United Kingdom and North America, including the bestselling Dead Man Running (the story of Stevan Utah, undercover in the Bandidos bike gang), Roger Rogerson (the notorious former police officer and now convicted killer), the 2017 Ned Kelly Award winner Getting Away With Murder (gay hate crimes in NSW) and The Snapshot Killer (coming up in April as a Hulu US doco, and currently in pitch as a 5 part drama series in the US). He’s just been commissioned by Hachette for a book on the Leongatha murder by poisoned Beef Wellington story.
He started his TV career at ABC Four Corners as a researcher/producer and then to the 9 Network’s Sundayprogram and as producer/head of research for Watchdog.
More recently he was the supervising producer of and appeared in the Seven Network’s Kennedy and Qld Clarion award winning blockbuster true crime series Murder Uncovered and co-creator/supervising producer of the Nine Network’s Murder, Lies and Alibis. He was the creator and series producer of the ITV/9Network 2022 series Australia Behind Bars. In these series, Duncan has been responsible for finding/selecting stories, overseeing their development and ensuring their depth, editorial integrity and dealing with legal issues. An essential component of these roles has been the mentoring the team – and learning from them.
He’s been a consultant and on-air expert crime talent in numerous other productions including 7’s Sunday Night, SBS Deep Water (gay hate crimes), the long running Crime Investigation Australia, and ITN UK’s 2023 Cops Who Kill.
Recent TV/radio & print appearances include Sky News, Today & Today Extra, Nine News, 7 News, 7 Spotlight, ABC 730 Report & ABC24, ITN (UK doco), Hulu (2x USA docos) etc. Radio includes 2GB (Ben Fordham), ABC Mornings NSW/SA/WA & in print – The Australian, Daily Telegraph, News.com.au, Daily Mail, The Guardian. Topics are numerous and include policing, how crimes are investigated, high profile mysteries like the disappearances of William Tyrell & Samantha Murphy, murder, sexual assaults, serial killers, scams/frauds, heists and so on. He also speaks on media/issues/crisis management.
Duncan was also national crime editor for the 7 Network’s digital channel (at start up) and regularly appears/comments on crime matters nationally and occasionally internationally (North America and UK) in print, digital, radio and television.
He is a judge in the annual Kennedy Awards for ‘outstanding crime reporting’ and ‘outstanding court and legal affairs reporting' and since 2022 presented a weekly true crime segment on radio 2CC Canberra with Stephen Cenatiempo. In 2023, he received the ACON (Aids Council of NSW) President’s Award for work in the establishment of the Special Commission into LGBTQI hate crimes.
Duncan has also worked extensively as a media adviser including director of communications to the NSW Minister for the Arts and other portfolios. In a former life, he was a detective in the New South Wales Police Force and a private investigator in the corporate world and in major criminal defence. He’s also been accepted as an expert witness on policing by the NSW Supreme Court (came in handy in a few defamation cases in which he gave evidence for News Ltd and Fairfax).
