I write about my experience of being working class, typically through the lens of comedy. I am genuinely fascinated by vulgar and crass language. Why are we so repulsed by it and what is it that repulses us from speaking in that way? Because it’s typically about activities that we all do as human beings. Wanking, shitting, orgasms (if you’re lucky), all these moments that are also quite vulnerable and private moments - that we can all relate to. I make funny work that genuinely represents Britains working class, not demonise them.
My first commission, Happy Hour (BBC Radio 4, Naked Productions), is a satirical play based in my old Wetherspoons, following two girls trying to figure out how to get rid of a dead body they left by the pubs bins. It received a lovely review in the Observer and feedback from a commissioner calling it “refreshingly light”. It was runner-up for the 2024 Imison Award. My second commission, Odds On, came out on BBC Radio 4 last year. Odds On is a black comedy based at a wake in my old social club. Spoiler Alert, obviously couldn’t get the rights to Sean Paul so I had to make my own: Pean Saul. Charlotte Delaney, Shelagh Delaney's daughter, tuned in and enjoyed it so much she asked me to adapt one of her mums short stories for stage. The National were excited by this idea and have asked for first dibs on the script. Last year I received my first theatre comission with Boundless Theatre and Customs House Theatre, SAFE, to help young people from under privileged backgrounds feel more seen and welcomed in theatre spaces. In 2024, I took part in SOHO Theatre’s Stand Up Lab, where I performed my first ever stand-up gig and have been open micing since. 2023 I created a comedic poetry night called ‘Rhymes & Stitches’ to break the stigma spoken word holds and to make art and joy financially accessible to all.
