Thomas Cassar is a Maltese UK-based biologist and natural history filmmaker. As a biologist he has extensive experience studying and working with a wide range of organisms. His expertise is entomology & arachnology, having co-authored three books, published over 30 scientific papers and discovered four new species to science. He has experience filming macro behavioural sequences both on location and in sets, including lone-shooting in relatively remote locations. One of his sequences has been broadcast on national television in Malta. He has produced, directed, filmed and presented a wide range of films - including a documentary about dinosaurs filmed at the Natural History Museum, London and a documentary about orchids which trick insects into pollinating them in devious ways, filmed across England, Costa Rica and the Maltese Islands. He uses a wide range of specialist macro equipment (probe lenses, wide-angle macro lenses, prime lenses, sliders, lighting etc.) and knows how to record sound (shotgun mics, radio mics, Zoom kit, studio commentary recording), and has shot on both Sony (FX6, A7sii & FS7) and Canon (R5C) cameras. He also has experience with timelapse photography and long lens work. He has experience with the whole production process, having worked closely with production managers, production designers, camera operators, editors, colourists, sound designers, composers, animators, motion designers, musicians and contributors of all kinds. He can speak English & Maltese fluently; he has a working knowledge of Italian and Spanish; and he has a basic knowledge of French.
