My latest project saw me appear as a guest presenter, specializing in music for CNN’s Inside Africa show. The episode filmed in the UK and South Africa was showcasing the worldwide success of music genre Amapiano. I have also recently produced a piece for the Guardian in Dakar. The feature film was about illegal immigration and it’s dangers. For the past five years I have been producing CNN shows African Voices, Inside Africa, Market Place Africa in West Africa. I was also until recently, working at French music TV channel TRACE where I presented and produced a music and culture show called CODE, a 10-part series on Afro-urban culture around the world, consisting of regional storytelling and interviews with the likes of Ckay, The Black-Eyed Peas, Shaggy, Liam Payne and Sean Paul. The show was broadcasted across 28 countries in 12 languages, filmed in French and English.
As much as I enjoyed the process, I couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling I had, to pursue a field I was more authentically drawn to. I’m fascinated by a more investigative form of journalism. I wanted to explore social issues and tackle difficult conversations.
Earlier this year I developed a new documentary series called As They See Me, in which I travel across Africa immersing myself in the worlds of people whose lives and subcultures reflect their society’s taboos and controversies. The portrait series reveals the raw, unfiltered, emotional truth behind these character’s realities in a very intimate style. Today, I would like to dive into difficult topics and uncover the hidden truths that may lie below the surface. Late last year, we produced an entirely self-funded 30-minute pilot episode, in which we travel to Durban in South Africa to follow Nazreen Alley, a former female bodybuilder turned private security agent. Nazreen found a calling for this industry after a decade of her life was lost after being raped at gun point at just 13 years old.
