I'm a director from New York permanently settled in London (US & UK passports) with twenty years of directing/producing/editing experience in the US and UK. I have directed seven feature docs, five for BBC's Storyville strand, all of which have been well-reviewed and played numerous festivals and three of which were released in cinemas, and many/diverse hours and series. My work is character-driven and often has an element of humour, despite taking on serious and often very sensitive topics. I love directing a range of genres (including current affairs, science, arts/culture, politics, and sport) in a variety of styles and have filmed around the world. I've done work for Netflix, BBC, Discovery, PBS, Arte, and many other channels in the US and internationally. I've interviewed all kinds of people, including world-class scientists, torture victims, rescue-workers, young children, and horse trainers. I am happy embracing existing formats or developing ideas from scratch, enjoy working in big teams and being almost entirely independent in equal measure. I am a proficient editor and a confident self-shooter, have a track record of receiving funded development, and have executive produced a range of work. I'm also a documentary judge, most recently for the Emmys short documentary category. I've published a number of articles and reviews on a variety of global topics, and have taught filmmaking at the NFTS, UCL, and Met Film School, and presented my work / given talks at many universities internationally, including Cambridge, LSE, Harvard, and NYU. Liz Mermin is a superb documentary director and film-maker. She shoots effectively and stylishly herself and is also a superb editor. Her track record - from a film about women from post-Taliban Afghanistan learning the skills of make-up and styling, to racehorses in Ireland, are among the most memorable feature documentaries of the last decade.
She is also a terrific team player and shooting PD, who worked with and for me on my presenter-led Arte series "What Brits Love.
Her faults? she will stop at nothing to produce the highest quality documentary that can be extracted from the budget.
