Before studying in Vancouver my educational journey took me through diverse paths. I earned a BA in Literature from Sussex and studied acting at the Oxford School of Drama. Working for over ten years in acting, including the narration of several children’s books for Audible, offered a unique understanding of storytelling from both performance and literary perspectives. acted in film, such as Joe Wright’s Atonement (2007), on the fringe in Othello (2013) and in new writing, short films and narrating a host of children’s audiobooks for Talking Books and Audible.
I have also explored literature practically through working with students. I have worked extensively in tutoring and as a learning support assistant and now assistant SENCO as part of Learning Support Departments. I have had the charge of selecting texts to try and engage students who were out of school due to mental ill-health, with learning differences or disabilities and those who claimed to “not like stories” in any form. In 2009 I worked with adolescent carers, aged 9 to 15 years old, leading script-writing courses for them with Hampstead Theatre. I saw storytelling give those young people -- who held a huge amount of responsibility for those they cared for -- relief, support and expression.
For the past six years I have worked on developing my own writing. This has mainly taken the format of screenplays and picturebooks. In writing and producing my first short film, Tides (2016). We filmed the short on a tight budget in Marseille with an evenly gendered crew and it was selected by the New Orleans Feminist Film Festival as a finalist to be screened. During that time I also worked as a reader for Hampstead Theatre new writing department. I also trained in comedy writing, I trained and perform regularly with Hoopla and The FA in long-form narrative improv and have taken comedy writing courses. So I have been developing several comedy drama series alomgside two more historical dramas to build my portfolio. Two of these have been in discussion with several producers.
Presently I'm developing various screenplays having co-founded One Boat Production company, collaborating with good friends Kiran Sawar and Andy Gower. Our work involves an array of screenplays and projects, some of which are my own creations, with discussions underway with the BBC. As well as writing for the company I am also a development producer, reading scripts, delivering notes and feedback and helping to build pitch decks.
