He has garnered recognition for his work, screening at the 2023 Festival du Nouveau as well as winning the Best Canadian Short Film award presented by the National Film Board of Canada at the 2022 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival for his short film "majboor-e-mamool". His earlier work, "Kashif", was also showcased at the 2020 TIFF Next Wave Film Festival.
Haaris is dedicated to showcasing underrepresented characters and exploring the emotions sparked by everyday moments. As a filmmaker of diasporic heritage, born in New York and raised in Toronto by Pakistani parents, he is drawn to stories that examine themes of identity, familial disconnection, and intergenerational differences.
He has years of experience working in production as a production coordinator and also has experience working in post-production as an editor.
His achievements and talent have earned him opportunities for further development, including being selected for IFFSA’s Bright Lights Talent Program, which supported the creation of "majboor-e-mamool", and being shortlisted for the Sundance Institute Episodic Labs with his pilot "Bintu’s Weddings". He was most recently mentored by award-winning and industry leading show-runner, Anthony Q. Farrell.
Haaris is a former participant of the Unsung Voices, a filmmaking mentorship program led by the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. He has since joined the festival as a member of the shorts programming committee and a pre-screener for features. He returns to the Unsung Voices program as an education program coordinator, further demonstrating his commitment to mentoring and developing the next generation of filmmakers.
