I research, too, taking deep dives into topics -- ranging from the potential of wave energy, the Seattle of Kurt Cobain, or Taiwan under gangster-politician-WWII-hero Chiang Kai-Shek, who led the island to the precarious situation it's currently in. I adore European history, from the era when mystical potions bubbled up in alchemists' laboratories inside the castle of Prague to the debaucherous France of the wild and forgotten Second French empire (1852-1870), when modern Paris sprang to life, race tracks and casinos arrived, haute couture bustled in, Everyman played the Bourse, and every noble gallivanted with a courtesan at his side.
As a
journalist, I cover climate change, renewable energy, the uncontrolled march of AI, and trends, leaps, and brouhahas in Europe as well as colorful personalities and luxurious locales.
As an author, I've written many
history-rich books about geopolitics for my 5-volume "What Every American Should Know..." series for Plume/Penguin and Penguin UK along with the occasional book about the supernatural or the subcultural, including my infamous biography for Pocket Books,
Courtney Love: Queen of Noise.For
my Substack, I explore the history behind current events, from "The Curse of the Nobel Prize" -- it sure didn't help Albert Camus -- and the missing history in
American Prometheus, the book that inspired
Oppenheimer, to the
Succession-like soap opera of the Bonaparte clan, who accompanied Napoleon in his astounding ascent, whinging all the way, but who are mostly absent in the Ridley Scott film.
I also write scripts, and I'm currently shopping a dramedy about the Bonapartes and another about a high-end antique store with a rat problem and some fishy side deals.
I am entirely flexible with my schedule, my hours, and my location for the next two months. And I don't mind working through the holidays.
