My academic career has taught me excellent research skills, having individually researched two dissertations; most recently a 15,000 word piece on contemporary absurdist fiction created by African American writers. Literature degrees necessitate the exploration of not only primary, literary texts, but also generic trends, the influence of historical contexts and philosophical, sociological and political discourses, postcolonialism being my area of expertise. As such, my time at university has rewarded me with extensive knowledge of the forces that converge in the production of media, along with the research skills necessary to develop this knowledge.
Moreover, my degrees have helped me develop my skills of communication, as I have had to understand, condense and transform the results of my research into clear, articulate arguments in the form of essays and verbal presentations. At Lancaster University, I studied creative writing for two years, and this experience has aided my ability to convey information, emotion and meaning in a more abstract fashion. As such, I feel I can communicate clearly when necessary, but I am equally comfortable with subtlety, both of which are essential to anyone working in media production.
My experience writing essays and creative pieces has ensured that I am a highly effective editor. For example, I condensed my undergraduate dissertation to just over half the size of my original draft and I practised editing others' creative writing during weekly workshops.
Additionally, I feel my time studying Postcolonial and World Literature at the University of St Andrews has equipped me to aid media companies willing to engage in the intellectual decolonisation that our changing world- increasingly aware of the historic injustices done to colonised nations- demands. The course takes only 5-6 students per year, and is one of very few courses like it in the United Kingdom, so I feel this specialised knowledge would be a valuable asset to companies keen to adjust to the demands of a socially conscious audience.
In summary, I am a skilled and knowledgeable researcher specialising in race and postcolonialism looking for a graduate level research role for a media production company, hoping to progress to editing, writing and finally production positions.
