The media is what we call the ‘throat and tongue’ of the government. It is impossible for radical ideas to penetrate the walls the Chinese government has built around free speech. Sadly, this is happening all over the world. Every day, communities are marginalized and victims are silenced. The most effective way to instigate change is through a generation of fearless journalists to accurately report, spark debate and are committed to what’s right.
I have written and produced journalistic content in two languages and three countries. Within 10 months I went from an occasional radio contributor for the Dead Good Show on BBC Radio Manchester to being signed as a freelance journalist to then picking up shifts in the News Room all whilst still studying at university. I thrive In a fast-paced work environment and work well under pressure. Working with industry giants challenged my confidence in my own work and opinions. On air, I had to develop convincing arguments under time pressure whilst being aware of my audience’s tastes and preferences. During my time as an intern at Sports Beijing, I represented the company by delivering a speech at age 15 at the American embassy due to my strength in public speaking. I have learned to become comfortable in uncomfortable situations and can work harmoniously with any demographic or team. In Madrid, I had to learn how to enchant audiences without language proficiency. This forced me to explore other avenues of journalism, such as digital media and how to tell a story through pictures and videos. I am excited to start pitching ideas and producing meaningful content that will have a positive impact on society.
