Hi! I’m a creative storyteller with a wealth of experience gained over two decades at the BBC. I love making emotionally compelling, character driven programmes laced with humour and have recently won the BAFTA Cymru award for Best Single Documentary, as well as the Celtic Media Festival award for Best Arts Programme. Last year I made Gareth Malone's Easter Passion (2x60, BBC1) - a music & history doc series at Somersault Studio. This year I've made Gareth Malone's Messiah (2x60, BBC1) and am currently on Saving Country Houses with Penelope Keith (10x45, C4).

Working in Fact Ent and Music, I’ve produced & directed 60 minute programmes ranging from prime-time episodes of Countryfile (BBC1) to Brothers in Dance (BBC4) – the BAFTA Cymru and Celtic Media Festival award winning doc about a dance work inspired by Black Lives Matter which gained Critic’s Choice in five papers. Other highlights include From Auschwitz with Love (BBC1), a doc about a veteran’s return to his former prison camp which scored BBC1’s highest Audience Appreciation Index in its year of TX. I’m also a dab hand at shortform, having crafted hundreds of history, art and music films for The One Show with big name talent, including Dan Snow, Anita Rani, Vic Reeves and Gyles Brandreth - as with the majority of my work, all shot and edited by me. Over recent months, I've self-shot cinematic drama recons for Moment of Proof & Fraud Squad at Brown Bob, obs doc for Saving Lives at Freemantle, factual content for Digging For Britain at Raw, behind-the-scenes and performance footage for Dr Who at the Proms, and filmed / edited competitor profiles for BBC Young Musician at BBC Studios. 

I enjoy devising entertaining formats and have just produced & directed the hour-long highlights programme for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World (BBC4/BBC Wales) - a prestigious contest known as ‘the World Cup of opera’. It was a fun challenge to make the niche art form of opera accessible to a wider audience by adopting a populist style and applying the excitement, emotion and familiar format beats of mainstream TV competitions. Also, my recent Weatherman Walking for Children in Need (1x60 BBC Wales/BBC2) juxtaposed heart-rending stories with moments of joy, culminating in Pudsey’s mountain top dance party – a new structural element I added to the format.

I pride myself on being able to take a fun, high-concept approach when needed, such as for The One Show’s ‘Virtual Choirs’, which combined hundreds of UGC singers in festive extravaganzas, and my stop-motion animated drama doc short The History of Action Man which is now used as a teaching aid on a storytelling course. 

Many of the programmes I make are ambitious, requiring technical and planning ability, as well as a knack for gaining the trust of contributors, plus editorial judgement due to sensitive content. My drama degree comes in handy when self-shooting period dramatic reconstructions to a high standard. As a multi-skilled programme maker with my own FX6 and the ability to off-line edit on Avid, I can be self-sufficient in all aspects of production and work alone if necessary, although I enjoy being part of a friendly team.

I’ve worked in development, have won commissions with self-generated ideas and am familiar with pitching. I also have experience of making content in BSL (with interpreters) for See Hear - a BBC series for the Deaf community. As an experienced musician / songwriter who has gigged widely, including at Glastonbury, I love producing bespoke music for my programmes, including title themes and dance tracks.
