Djamel Turner is an up-and-coming filmmaker whose commitment to telling real stories and creating realistic characters is rooted in his experience as an actor. He acquired a high grade LAMDA; won a scholarship at one of the most prestigious under-18 drama schools (‘Stagecoach’); and became one of the youngest Drama Honors students in his school’s history.
Before turning to directing narrative, Djamel’s work included shooting commission training and promotional material for Nando’s. This ultimately led Djamel to work as a director for the company LIC where Djamel has directed a docuseries pilot called ‘There’s food at home’ which aims to educate British audiences about African cuisine and culture.
Alongside this, he worked on multiple projects with OMHG Productions, writing and starring alongside the likes of Sara Stewart (‘Batman Begins’, ‘Mrs Brown’).
Djamel has worked as a writer for New Tribe Productions on a project highlighting substance abuse and sexism, including ‘Behind the Eyes’ – an emotive depiction of surviving drug addiction, which has since acquired shortlisting from the 2022 Paus Film Festival as well as a nomination for ‘Best Film’ at the National Youth Film Academy Awards and is to be showcased in the famous ODEON Luxe theater in front of the industry - including David Bradley and Edgar Wright amongst many others.
His latest collaboration – with Tom Reeves – is a short called ‘Retaliation is a Must’ which is currently in the later stages of post-production with a release at the end of 2022.
