The identity contestations, the clash and intersection between the old and the new, contemporary environmental issues are subjects that I address them in my works. In 2013 I was awarded the ‘Early Career Film Fellowship’ from TISS, Mumbai, for my documentary ‘Where the Clouds End’ – a documentary about tribal identity. In 2015, I directed and edited ‘Between the Forest and the Song’, a film that explores the song naming tradition in Kongthong Village. In 2017, I directed and edited ‘Because We Did not Choose’, a documentary that examines the participation of tribal labour during the First World War supported by the Commonwealth Graves Commission and the Goethe Institut. I also co-wrote and edited ‘My Name is Eeooow’ that won the prestigious Intangible Culture prize at the Royal Anthropological Institute’s Ethnographic Film Festival, Bristol, UK and Best Film at the Film Festival della Lessinia, Italy in 2017. In 2019, my feature fiction ‘Lorni-the Flaneur’ starring Adil Hussain (Life of Pi etc.) premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia (FIPRESCI recognised) and was nominated for numerous awards at various film festivals. I also work with sound and video installations. The installations address themes that examine and explore the fine lines of race and creed and the circumstances where they blur or assert themselves. My installations also reflect my interest in creative peace-making in an atmosphere of racial polarity and ethno-nationalism. When I am not making films, I produce music sampling indigenous beats and folk rhythms to contemporary themes and motifs. I also write poetry in Khasi. My poems have been translated into several languages. I have served as a visiting faculty member and a resource person for several universities in India and elsewhere. In my free time, I enjoy long walks in the outdoors with my dog, Sheila Heinz.
