To Whom it May concern
I met Edward Haapala on the 48-hour film challenge in 2023, in Johannesburg, South Africa. I was one of the Producers and the Director (Kgosi Choene) highly recommended Edward to join the team as a producer. The competition serves best for established teams, but for the rest of us it reveals, through pressure, the people really are intuitively good filmmakers. There were over 13 new people at the office but his passion, patience and understanding made him stand out.
Since then as a producer, he has shown immense knowledge and street savvy where most artists fail. A good balance of heart, knowledge and a skilled hand.
He understands Story principles that would make McKee and Volger proud teachers. I still use him to double-check the quality of my writers to this day. He motivates us and to this day keeps us producing content constantly. I saw in Edward Financial discipline with the empathy to know when the crew needs luxury or a stern talking to in order to complete the mission at hand. His ability to talk to anyone may attract people who take advantage of others, but it opens him up to meeting new good people. It is because of this quality that we met in the first place. It is through this open spirit that we were able to run multiple projects while maintaining, if not exceeding, expected quality.
The South African film industry is unregulated which opens the door for many chancers and exploitative individuals, however, through reputation and experience those who love what they do and the people they do it with: outshine the riff-raff.
I am saddened that he is leaving but glad that the motion picture medium will have a new champion in a place where his good works can reach a wider audience.
