Not only did I work on the front line of programme production, for example, I worked as an assistant director on an instrumental competition for China Central Television's music channel, during this experience I was responsible for writing the programme's script and coordinating the various positions to complete the live recording. I also had to organise various documents for thousands of participants and judges, and because of my reliable working skills I gained the trust of the director, I became the person in charge of training the interns and leading them to adapt efficiently to their new positions. It was an experience that I am enormously proud of, and I discovered my strengths, such as the ability to learn and adapt very quickly to new positions and take charge of new tasks, and I was recognised for my ability to work.
And I worked as an overseas distribution assistant at Hunantv.com Interactive Entertainment Media Co. Ltd., which gave me a macro view of the TV industry. Curious about rights deals, I submitted my CV to the company and passed a direct interview with the leader. During the three seasons I worked there, I quickly mastered the distribution process, from business meetings to negotiating pricing, from contract signing to financial management, from upstream rights summarisation to downstream media delivery, I was involved in all aspects of the process, and I was able to ensure efficient and friendly communication with overseas distribution platforms and domestic producers. During these six months, apart from familiarising myself with the complexities of paperwork and mastering various office software, especially PowerPoint and Excel, I have also gained a lot of marketing knowledge and communication skills and a richer perspective on the TV industry, a platform where I can learn from and interact with experienced people in the industry. It is an interesting job, except that now I am far less interested in the financial side of dealing with contracts and production than the creative work, but this experience could help me in related jobs in the future.
In addition to this, I also got involved in social media operations, as a trendy way for young people to socialise online, I needed to learn how to use social media, which is undeniably a combination of traditional communication mediums and diverse terminals that are essential to the development of media today. As my best friend is a celebrity, I set up a social media management team of no less than 10 people from scratch on the Weibo platform in China to help him manage his followers, with different divisions of work and accounts, including photo design, video editing, copywriting, business outreach, data analysis and so on. Also raising over £30,000 in funds from fans to plan a variety of celebrity support campaigns and advertisements. During these experiences, I have proven myself to be an effective communicator and team player, in addition to working with colleagues or communicating with clients. I have also developed my resilience and multitasking skills while creating social media accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers and organising a team to run them. But new media will not be my future career path, although I cannot get away from the influence of social media now, as I prefer to spend more time polishing a classic than chasing hot topics all the time. I may not be able to apply these experiences to my work in the UK, but I am confident that the personal skills I have gained will help me continue to be valuable in my future endeavours.
