Read MoreJamiel Laurence occupies a unique position within the wider arts economy, as an artist creating work through collaborative practice, while also producing the work of other artists through entrepreneurship, bringing together his experience as a Creative Director, Venue Director, Producer and award winning Filmmaker, and Choreographer.Since 2018, Jamiel has demonstrated the ability to facilitate new opportunities and generate dance employment, founding the #FundFreelanceDance initiative, and more recently launching the unique event concept, BALLET NIGHTS, premiering in October 2021.As an award-winning Choreographer & Filmmaker, Jamiel has created works for several notable organizations including BBC ARTS, BBC Scotland, Google, Scottish Ballet, OneDanceUK, 3Tone Records, The Peter Darrell Trust, Celtic Connections, Edingburgh Fringe, Ballet Ireland, Edinburgh Fringe, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Dance School of Scotland, Rubicon Dance Company and more.After retiring from his 12 year career touring at all scales and internationally with Scottish Ballet as a soloist, Jamiel pursued his independent work via his crowdfunding initiative #FundFreelanceDance before becoming the Creative Director and inaugural choreographer for the newly formed Rubicon Dance Company, based in Cardiff UK and borne out of the wider Rubicon Dance organization as a way to get welsh-trained graduate dancers into paying dance jobs.Selecting the founding company members in September 2021, Jamiel created the company's first highly acclaimed full-length production, The Nutcracker premiering in December 2021. In March 2022, Jamiel created the Nutcracker Bach schools tour offer, delivered to over 780 primary and high school students across Wales, and in April 2022, produced the company's digital immersive audience experience, 16:1. In September 2022, Jamiel delivered the inaugural TRIPLE BILL featuring a triple world premiere of new works, marking the milestone for the Graduate Company project as a success.Jamiel is also a teacher and coach, delivering company classes, and teaching for organizations including New Adventures, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Scottish Ballet Associates, #FundFreelanceDance, The Lanterns Studio Theatre in London, and for those professionals engaged across his various stage and film projects. Jamiel is passionate about developing both professionals and student dancers towards achieving their potential and continues to evolve his own teaching practice to this end.Now seeking to work with like-minded thinkers on exciting projects putting dance into new spaces, Jamiel is focused on opportunities that assist with the recovery of the arts & culture sector post-pandemic and create conditions in which artists can thrive.
