I am a recent First Class Zoology graduate who writes and produces my own mini wildlife documentaries independently as a hobby. I love interesting people with my interests (natural history!)- previously I have worked as a presenter at an aquarium, a school science tutor and and volunteer zookeeper in two different zoos. My largest strengths are that I am creative and imaginative; I enjoy selecting and stringing together video clips, commentary and music into the most polished and emotive story I can make. I am admittedly a perfectionist though, so sometimes this can take a while! I also enjoy writing stories that people can learn from, hence I have honed my interest into documentary filmmaking. In addition to making videos, I make my own clothes in my spare time from old clothes, furnishings and scrap fabrics. This began years ago from a recurring frustration that fashion retailers never had the exact outfit I was picturing and was later followed by consumerist guilt for feeling tempted into fast fashion culture. Like videomaking, here I enjoy the logic puzzle of working out how to turn an idea I love into a reality - and the best part about it is that I can create something entirely unique without having to ask for a planet's worth of resources. In the professional industry of wildlife filmmaking, I am completely brand new. I am here looking for experience- anything - my ultimate aim is to transform my hobby into an acquisition of professional and thus marketable skills, so I can continue doing what I love for the rest of my life. Until now, I have been using a very novice software called Moovly and I don't have the financial means to travel and film anywhere exotic myself, so I am very limited to what I can create. Therefore, I am looking for access to expert guidance and technology, which this industry offers. I would also like to meet and work with like-minded individuals, so I can produce something as part of a team (most of my portfolio work is currently independent). I have maintained a very positive rapport with fellow staff from all my previous workplaces and I am now a manager at my current bar job, so I have thrived in both team player and leadership roles. At my previous workplaces, I was reputably hard working and committed to the job, no matter how unglamourous it was. At university I managed to balance two highly demanding jobs at once alongside a full-time degree, and within one year of dealing with drunks and picking up feces in my current pub chain, I got promoted from bottom-level bar associate to junior manager... I guess it was worth it? From my experience in working with the general public and tutoring students, I have noticed that the people who tend to show an ignorance or repulsion towards science do so because they struggle to understand it. It is therefore very rewarding seeing their satisfaction with themselves when they do finally understand a concept and then watching their engagement with the subject increase noticeably as a result afterwards. My final note is: I would love to incorporate creativity with education for the rest of my life and I believe even the smallest foot in the door with the wildlife filmmaking industry will help me achieve this.
