Ian is equally excited to shouder a handheld camera alone in the alpine as he is helming a multicamera shoot crew of 80.  With a focus on curiosity, collaboration and visual storytelling, Ian has been creating spectacular Emmy-award winning images from authentic moments for over thirty years.

Ian is also a co-founder of Storm Films Inc., a Vancouver-based production services company providing crew, equipment and logistical suppport for factual, documentary, broadcast and commecial clients. 

A full member of the Canadian Socety of Cinematographers and certified Advanced RPAS (Drone) pilot, Ian is an expert in Steadicam, Shotover, Motocrane, GSS, Ronin 2 and 4D and every camera system concievable, including some that some that he invented.

Whether documenting a man’s heartbreaking final moments of life in PBS's The Suicide Tourist, using moonlight to reveal wild polar bears in Apple’s Earth at Night or crafting period imagery for Robert Kirkman's Heros & Villains, Ian’s work is grounded in the real-world and expressed cinematically.

Ian’s cinematography has been widely celebrated, including nominations for three Emmys, winning one. He’s shared his curiosity and passion for visual storytelling as adjunct professor of Advanced Cinematography at UBC and SFU, and continues to guest lecture at films schools and workshops.

Ian contributes to publications including The New York Times and Canadian Cinematographer Magaizne and develops custom equipment to create unique visual effects.

Ian holds a US 01 visa, is active mountaineer and cyclist and married father of two children and he dislikes writing about himself.
