John is a very knowledgeable, flexible, and hard working individual with whom it's a pleasure to work alongside. For our TV series Sunken Warships: Secrets from the Deep John was able to utilise his own contacts to help us reach out to archive houses based in Argentina that proved invaluable for one of our episodes. We were also able to benefit from John's diligent and exacting attitude to archival research and he also provided some great script editing services. John's wide ranging skill set is a definite advantage and we wouldn't hesitate to work with him again on future projects.
I worked closely with John on Air Warriors, he was the AP on two docs I produced. He was an invaluable right hand man. As I was shooting across all 10 episodes as well as the 2 I was producing John had to step up and do much more than just the AP role. He meticulously researched each subject and then wrote initial scripts for edits while I was still shooting. In short I couldn't have produced my 2 episodes without John having my back! I would wholeheartedly recommend him and look forward to working with him again soon.
John has proved to be one of the most reliable, hard-working and effective member of the team on this latest Smithsonian series of the highly-rated 'Air Warriors' show. He has undertaken a substantial range of duties in researching, producing and setting up film shoots and I cannot recommnd him highly enough to any other production. His work ethic has proved second to none; he is charming and cheerful - even when being asked to undertake the most challenging of tasks, and has never let us down in any way. A 'one of a kind' - 'go to' guy - and probably the best recommendation I can make is that he will be top of my list of staff whom I want to employ on whatever my next project may be. I shall regret giving this testemonial when I find that others have recognised his worth and he is no longer available to work with me! I'm happy to discuss John's abilities with anyone seeking a recommendation, and can be contacted on strangebob@hotmail.com or 0777 1851939)
John is still quite new to television but brings with him a lifetime of solid experience and wisdom in other fields and a good deal of dedication and enthusiasm. He has an amazing capacity for getting his head fully around large and complex subjects and has an impressive eye for detail - much better in fact than many AP’s who have worked in television longer than he has. He’s really engages with the subject matter and tenaciously tracks down potential contributors - often overseas and linked to stories which occurred long ago. He’s personable and therefore good at reaching out to these people whom he treats with respect and integrity. He works fast and is responsive to producers’ needs. Having worked with him on Smithsonian’s Air Warriors, I (and the whole team in fact) can’t recommend him highly enough. He’d be a real asset to any production team wise enough to employ him.
I have worked with John on several development projects and also a feature length documentary for C4. For that project he sought me out and convinced me that he was the person for the job which he went on to do admirably. He is great at finding contributors and interviewing them thoroughly as part of the research process and as part of that remit he is also good at assessing them for tv, their stories and how they fit into the narrative structure. He also was thorough at fact checking our scripts. I wouldn't hesitate to use him again as a researcher but also someone who has the maturity, with a little more training, as a capable AP. He fitted really well into the team and got on with all - contributors and crew.
John worked with me as a researcher at Testimony full-time for a period of five months. He is conscientious, very good with contributors and full of original programme ideas. He has wide ranging historical knowledge with a speciality of Britain at war in the 20th century. He has strong, and incredibly useful, connections with military veterans, academics, archives, and museums such as the Imperial War Museum. I can highly recommend him.
