My desire to work in film first started in Sixth Form where I volunteered to be a writer in my college’s internal magazine publication Cliffhanger, in which I researched and wrote two arguing film and literature pieces. This project gave me a brief glimpse into a potential career in film criticism and reviewing that I had intended to pursue in the future. Because of this, I have undergone work experience with online magazine Bristol 24/7, writing two local news articles that have featured on the website’s home page upon being published. I have also created a film blog on WordPress.com called ‘Just a Little Film Blog’ and have published a range of discussion pieces. However, my interest in breaking into the film industry has since broadened to the film festival scene after volunteering at Radical, Encounters and TIFF, functioning in fast-paced and tightly scheduled industry environments. As well as this, my interest has also spread to film production companies and arthouse cinemas in a coordination or archival capacity since furthering my work experience in administration and flair for organisation.
Although my experience in higher education has been ornamental in my desire to work in the film and arts scene, I was eager to enter the professional world after graduating from UWE as that is where I have acquired the essential mentality and practical skills for roles with higher responsibilities. During and soon after my degree, I worked in administration positions in companies varying from medical treatment to youth charities to finance. My previous long-term position in pensions has geared me with countless skills such as professionalism with clients, executive decision-making, time management, working under pressure, conducting training, and managing a small team. And my most recent venture in a camera warehouse has given me the opportunity to work on the outskirts of the media production industry, hiring camera and lighting equipment for small-scale film projects and large-scale productions. After gaining experience across different professional sectors through administration, I wish to continue to use the versatility of the role to explore different avenues of the arts industry.
