I am looking to enter the unscripted TV industry as a trainee researcher (after a 20-year career as a print, digital and broadcast journalist and lecturer). Having recently taken Bectu’s TV Researcher course, and with recent ScreenSkills and UWE screen production courses under my belt, I am now looking to gain research experience as I enter the industry. With plenty of transferable skills from my career as a journalist (such as generating story ideas, sourcing and interviewing subjects for profile features, fact-finding and checking, as well as technical broadcasting skills) and with a firm understanding of the development and production process, I am confident I have the skills, knowledge and experience needed to hit the ground running in unscripted TV.Prior to beginning my transition from journalism to TV production, I published my first book, Bikepacking (Mountain Bike Camping Adventures on the Wild Trails of Britain), which took two years to research, writer and photograph and which led to my appearance as a contributor on BBC Countryfile. Working with Sean Fletcher and a small film crew on the Gower Peninsula to recreate a journey from my book inspired me to begin a very different journey – to use my existing skills and passion for documentary to begin a new career helping to bring inspiring stories to the small screen.
