Osian has been an integral part of the BBC Mammals team throughout. During the two-year filming period he facilitated the smooth and efficient planning, execution, and retrieval, of footage for dozens of international shoots. Osian has always a been reliable and confident pair of hands, even when faced with new challenges, and teams pushing the boundaries of what is known to be possible.

For example, I undertook a shoot to Svalbard in April 2023 – at the time I was already 15 weeks into my 18-week edit, so we needed to find a way to transfer the footage from Svalbard to the BBC offices in Bristol, prepare it and have it in the edit, before the team returned home. Our solution was to use Starlink technology to transfer the footage back via satellite. Osian spent a great deal of time working out the best workflow for the team on location to maximise the Starlink’s capability, and still meet the requirements of the edit. Osian was the one who made himself available (over weekends as well) to received and prepared the transferred footage successfully for the edit. This was the first time a BBC film crew had used Stalink technology and successfully transferred the footage home for the edit.

During the post-production of Mammals, Osian has continued to always be supportive and efficient, facilitating and troubleshooting the requirements of six edits simultaneously over the course of more than a year, with some very intensive periods. Towards the end of post-production, I worked closely with Osian editing the ‘Mammals prequel’ ahead of the series release. Osian is extremely collaborative, comes with great ideas and takes direction very well. I was extremely impressed how quickly he understood and ran with our brief, his quick editing ability and can-do attitude to a seemingly never-ending number of requests and reversions. The finished edit was incredibly well received, and at the point of me writing this, has been watched over 4.6 million times on Instagram alone.
