My time in university was a fantastic learning experience for many reasons; throughout my three years, I have not only developed my skills as a writer but have also gained experience on set as a practical filmmaker and excelled in my ability to analyse and critique cinema.
I’ve always been a creative individual; English was one of my strongest subjects in school, particularly story writing and I’ve been an avid guitar player since I was young. When I began my journey into the language of film, I started to see cinema in a whole new light, and I was instantly incapsulated by it. I learned the art of story structure through my multiple scriptwriting modules, and how to read film from both a narrative perspective and as an artistic form through my theoretical practices.
To me, my desire to learn, coupled with my high work ethic, are what I feel to be my best attributes. In my first year of university, I was very much working to a 2:2 level. However, having completed my time there, I’ve graduated with a high 2:1, having achieved a 1st class grade in a few of my assignments.
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve always been naturally creative through my musical exploits and academic work; nonetheless I feel I possess other attributes, that I've gained over time through my upbringing and social experiences, that would benefit me greatly in the world of media production. Firstly, I’ve always been confident when interacting with others; having spent most of my childhood in a military family environment, I’m lucky enough to have lived in a variety of different places and been given the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of people. Being moved about so often as a child made reintroducing myself and building relationships second nature for me, and as result, social interaction is not something I’ve ever struggled with.
Continuing along the line of interpersonal skills, I like to think that as well as being easy to get along with, I’m also a real team player. I’ve played competitive football since before I can remember and spent 5 years playing in a successful Welsh academy side who would compete against teams from all over the country, so I know the importance of communication and teamwork. This experience has also given me a competitive edge that I feel will greatly assist me in such a competitive industry.
As well as football, I’ve also worked part time as a dish washer and now a bar tender in a local restaurant back home in Wales. This again is an experience which has taught me many things including the meaning of hard work, while giving me a baptism of fire in working under pressure, within an incredibly stressful environment.
Overall, I’d rather not sit here and tell you how I’m the most talented student to ever come out of John Moores, or how I’m better than everyone else because that simply isn't the case, however what I can promise is that I will give my best at everything I attempt in order to develop and improve because in my eyes, talent is meaningless without the hard work to back it up.
