I started my directing career in documentaries, where I made a number of single films for Channel 4, ITV and the BBC, with subject areas that would often feature those on the margins of society. I would always dig deep to find humour, compassion and human truth. The experience of shaping and crafting narrative in the factual arena proved invaluable when writing my first short screenplay, ‘Tenner’. The film went on to win a best director award at the British Independent film Festival and launched my career in a new direction, making scripted drama and doc/drama. In the last few years I've become a series regular on Call the Midwife, a hugely popular period drama for the BBC. I've also made many other prime-time series including Grantchester, Death in Paradise, Law and Order and Lewis. For my doc/drama work, I've made singles and series about George Washington, Caesar, Caligula, Lord Lucan and a host of others who've lived through extraordinary experiences.
I love to travel, so between directing drama, I worked across six series wih Bear Grylls. Bear's team include advisors from both the SAS and SBS. Their dynamic approach to problem solving helped me create fresh stunts and action sequences in some of the toughest locations on Earth. The results have found a huge global audience and Bear is a household name synonymous with adventure. It is truly rewarding when I get the opportunity to feed all these filmic experiences between scripted and factual production, where I still have a passion to explore amazing stories.
