Since the Autumn of 2021 I have worked as a freelance AC and Operator on high-end documentaries for broadcasters such as the BBC (Louis Theroux Interviews) and Netflix (MH370, King of Clones, Mysteries of the Faith). I can operate a wide range of cinema cameras, including RED, ARRI, and Sony, as well as gimbals, grip, drones, and a variety of lenses from CN20s to vintage glass and anamorphics. My experiences include interview setups, actuality, and unfolding events, a skill which is paramount in documentaries. Preparation, anticipating the action and communicating well with your team are crucial for success. My roles have often combined the responsibilities of AC, Spark and Operator, which is possible due to my strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple tasks while under pressure. This, alongside my positive attitude has helped me to build lasting professional relationships.
Before going freelance I was the Senior Camera Technician for blue chip natural history shoots at VI Rental in Bristol. I have prepared many jobs for Wildspace, BBC, Offspring, True to Nature and many other companies. My role consisted of rigging, testing and troubleshooting equipment for shoots as well as running kit demos for operators, and production team members. I would often work with productions and operators to fine tune the kit and enjoyed creating custom setups, for example turning a Gemini into a remote head to capture a shot of a bird's nest in a tree. I also provided tech support for teams in the field, requiring proficient problem solving, effective communication and a comprehensive understanding of the equipment. During my time at VI Rental I acquired a strong foundation of technical knowledge and experience that I am continually building on.
Aside from my technical knowledge and experience I have a deep passion for nature and have worked in biological sciences and conservation since 2006. Research studies include; Dipterocarps in Danum Valley, Borneo, cetaceans in Tenerife, leopard behaviour in South Africa, and entomological research in Mozambique.
My natural history filmmaking experience includes One Strange Rock; filming a peregrine falcon sequence in the Swiss Alps in winter, as well as an ice climbing sequence. I was the primary camera operator for an award winning short film, ‘The Drills of Afi Mountain’, filming behavioural sequences of drill monkeys as well as interviews in the Nigerian rainforest. I worked on the One Show team at Tigress as a researcher, shoots included water voles in Glasgow, and invertebrates in an abandoned house. More recently on King of Clones (Netflix), I filmed a camel birth using Sony FX6s under moonlight, on a long lens and a dual operated gimbal. I shot my showreel in Bako National Park, Borneo. I spent one week filming there with a goal to create an emotive piece which portrays the beauty of the rainforest using a combination of long lens, drone, and cinematic techniques such as the dolly zoom effect.
I am passionate about continuously looking for techniques to raise the bar of what we can achieve as filmmakers whilst simultaneously educating and inspiring viewers about the natural world.
