I studied Ancient History at the University of Manchester, and it is there that I formulated the idea of combining both passions - the short-term goal being to find work as a researcher, preferably historical based study, for film/television/documentary. While I love the idea of doing research, I also believe that having an understanding of film/television production would benefit me greatly. My focal study at university was the social lives of ordinary people in the ancient world, and my dissertation investigated the portrayal of Roman women in Livy’s History of Rome. My aim was to provide the reader with an insight into the roles and lives of women of this period. It is also an area that I believe ripe for a documentary. The feats of men of this time have been extensively glorified (and vilified) but little screen time and study has been given to the wives, mothers and daughters of such men. Another great interest of mine is Japan. In my spare time I have studied Japanese history, its language, its culture and its cinema in depth. Over the years I have immensely enjoyed the films of Kurosawa and Miyazaki, the literal narratives of Murakami and Kawakami, and the stunning paintings of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
