My most recent film, 'Mozart's Sister', recovered the erased musical life of Maria Anna Mozart. It was nominated for a Rose d'Or, won two AACTA Awards, was Highly Commended at the AIB Awards, long-listed for a Grierson, broadcast on PBS and Sky Arts UK, and became Australia's fourth highest-grossing cinema documentary of 2024, running twelve weeks in cinemas.
Making it put me on a path I'm still on: uncovering the women whose lives and work have been written out of history. That's now led me to the women of Venice - and to a harder realisation alongside it. We're standing at the edge of another act of erasure, as AI learns from an incomplete historical record and projects it forward. Restoring these lost histories isn't just historical repair - it's how we stop AI building the future on bad data about the past.
Before Mozart's Sister, my most significant work was 'The Surgery Ship' - a multi-award-winning feature documentary I directed, wrote and produced, which performed strongly for SBS. I then pitched it to National Geographic as an eight-part series, where I was Series Creator and Show-runner: leading a twelve-person crew through a challenging shoot in post-Ebola West Africa, then a twenty-person post-production team in Australia, as lead producer with creative sign-off across the series.
Inspired by the adage 'truth is stranger than fiction', my directing work has also taken me from diamond diving in Africa to wildlife trafficking in Burma and across the Australian outback, including 'Love in Our Own Time' and 'The Day We Saved the Zoo'. Alongside my own films, I co-founded Media Stockade with Rebecca Barry in 2012. Our slate has broadcast in more than 60 countries - on National Geographic, Netflix, PBS, ABC, BBC, Discovery, Hulu and more - including the ABC true-crime series 'The Family Court Murders'.
In 2020, our documentary 'Power Meri', directed by Joanna Lester, won the Walkley Foundation's June Andrews Award for Women's Leadership in Media. I trained with a Masters in Documentary from AFTRS and a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons. 1) from the University of Sydney. Above all, I love working with great people on stories that matter.
