About Me

Sonita Gale is an independent filmmaker based in London.

Her heritage is central to her storytelling. Born in Wolverhampton to Indian parents who settled in the UK following the 1947 Partition. She is passionate about uplifting the stories of migrants and marginalised communities through her work.

Sonita’s directorial debut, Hostile, premiered at Raindance Film Festival in October 2021. The film exposes the UK’s hostile immigration system and sheds light on the human cost of these inhumane policies. Hostile was longlisted both for a BAFTA in the category of Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, and for three BIFAs in the categories of Best Debut Director, Best Documentary and for the Raindance Discovery Award.

She founded Galeforce Films in 2011 and has worked on numerous films as a Producer or Director including, Andrew Carnegie: Rags to Riches, Power to Peace (2015), International Health Service (2020) with Emmy and BAFTA-nominated Director Ursula Macfarlane, and the lockdown comedy web-series Happy Epidemic (2020).

In 2022, Sonita participated in BIFA Springboard, a programme designed to support writers, directors and producers to continue and develop their careers after producing a first feature.

Sonita is an experienced public speaker passionate about refugee & migrants’ rights. On tour with her directorial debut, Hostile, she has sat on panels with activist Patrick Vernon OBE, Enver Solmon (CEO of the Refugee Council), Yasmin Ahmed (Director of Human Rights Watch) and academic Dr Maya Goodfellow.

On behalf of Jason Solomons, Sonita was selected to be a part of the BAFTA nominating jury for the Documentary category for the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2023.

Sonita is currently immersed in the next phase of her filmmaking journey. She has written her debut short film which she expects to begin filming in early 2025. She is in the process of writing a full-length feature based on this short. Sonita is also developing the story of Andrew Carnegie into a limited series, co-produced with Nicole Ansari. It will feature Brian Cox as the lead, who is also serving as the executive producer. She and her dedicated production team are also in the early stages of filming for her next documentary, which is currently in pre-production.
