Jim is genuinely one of the good guys. He brings a director’s brain to everything he does, which makes sense given how long he’s worked in that role. You can see it in the way he thinks about story, tone and the bigger picture of an episode. He’s thoughtful and sensitive in all the right ways, always considering the emotional arc as much as the mechanics. He understands how to shape a journey, not just a run of scenes. He’s also incredibly easy to work with. Collaborative, calm under pressure and completely without ego. He cares about getting it right and delivering something everyone can be proud of. He’s a proper team player and, honestly, a joy to work alongside.

JBM relied on Jim to pull together a complicated mix of films. The challenge was to produce and direct a feature length documentary, a 30 minute promotional film AND a music video all at the same time. Creating all the above whilst maintaining a strong narrative for each, and meeting tight deadlines was no easy task.

Our project featured 24 pop artists from 24 countries. They were approached by a passionate director who gave the right time, interest, and dedication to make each one feel comfortable, and perform brilliantly on and off screen. His ability to adapt to every situation made the entire process smooth and pleasant. This really gave the story of our ambitious project great depth and emotion, which translated beautifully onto the screen.

We could not have achieved such a brilliant result without his great leadership capabilities, and most importantly his friendly and human approach to the entire process - whether it be with the production team or the artists themselves. We first recruited Jim in 2002 to work on an epic documentary project that, at that point, had already been going for ten years (and would continue for another ten after that). It was a tricky project, with a director who was shooting in a number of international locations, various other crew scattered around the world and a team who were fiercely protective of the stories and characters.

Jim was tasked with dropping himself into this complex project and filming the Brazilian strand of the story. He excelled beyond expectations. Not only did he manage the tricky behind-the-scenes situations, but he brought back exquisite footage that was nuanced, sensitive and exactly what the project needed.

Jim returned to Brazil to continue filming this story for us ten years later and once again he showcased his talent, cognizance, sensitivity and skills to great effect. I could not recommend Jim highly enough.
