Over two decades I've made more than 30 documentaries, drama-docs and full dramas, many of them large-scale high-budget projects, for a wide range of broadcasters. A few examples: ‘Union’ with David Olusoga’ (BBC2), which won an RTS West; ‘First Brit’ (Channel 4) made headlines around the world; ‘Dinosaur Hunters’ (Channel 4) won a BAFTA. I’ve also worked in Popular Factual (‘John Bishop’s Great Whale Rescue’, ITV1), and series produced for Daytime (‘Coast & Country Auctions’, BBC1). I’ve made drama-docs (‘Great Escape’, ITV1), and full dramas (‘Dinosaur Hunters’, Channel 4). I've often been involved with initial development & pitching. And have wide experience of carrying out and managing all the key processes of: preliminary research, script development, recces, shoot planning and shoots (from single to multi camera, with teams ranging from small to large & including drones, helicopters and underwater, in locations around the world - from the Arctic to the Himalayas; and China to the USA; and pretty much every part of the UK). And of course I have managed many films through edit and final post, as a director, as an edit producer and as a series producer.
As a Series Producer/Show Runner, I have wide experience in creating and managing budgets, recruiting and managing staff, and delivering a creative vision on time and on budget. I've run teams as large as 60 and as small as 5, and consider myself a very good manager of people and budgets, a team player and a very creative thinker. I've worked very successfully with contributors, actors and presenters, among them Anita Rani, David Olusoga, Professor James Shapiro and comedian John Bishop. And I've also brokered special access to many institutions large and small, from the British Library to the National Museum of India. Gaining unique film access to the DNA testing of Britain's oldest complete skeleton, Cheddar Man, at the Natural History Museum, for my film 'The First Brit' (C4) was a big achievement that I'm particularly proud of. As was the access we negotiated as a team with Merlin Entertainment and the Chinese authorities to film the remarkable 'move' of 2 Beluga whales from Shanghai to Iceland ('John Bishop's Great Whale Rescue', ITV1).
I bring ambitious visual flair & strong editorial and scripting skills to all of my work. Writing is a particular strength of mine, from pitch and research documents to commentary. I have a very strong instinct for narrative, story telling and structure. I've also taught and mentored many film students in both the UK and Europe, and have a strong academic background.
