Now I am actively looking for work in the film industry!I chose to study law because I wanted an intellectual challenge as well as a practical understanding of contracts, commerce, intellectual property, and so on. These courses, taken as a whole, are the essence of every company. To choose law before film studies, for example, was a conscious decision; for I never needed a reason to read around film culture or watch films critically – this would always be a part of my lifestyle. However, in choosing a hard discipline, such as law, and keeping my enjoyment of film outside the sphere of academia, I have shown myself to be a disciplined and exceptional student and, most importantly, my love of film remains an authentic, curious love of film. The movies, and the idea of a career in the movies, was an antidote to my duller times as a student, and never the source of exasperation! The courses I chose at university, both in Oslo and Edinburgh, demonstrate my versatility as a candidate. I moved from abstract, philosophical debates on the morality of law, to Brexit, the contemporary political question of our time, which shows an elasticity of reasoning and adaptable research skills. It is also a testament to my writing to achieve a First Class level in each subject, because although an intertextual approach to problem solving can illuminate new ideas and connections, this approach is only useful if your communication is clear and concise. This degree is a testament to my ability to organise, synthesise and distil ideas – whether this is required orally or in writing. It is these skills of analysis and evaluation which I will utilise in my working life.A variety of work experience has polished my professional skills and given me a pragmatic understanding of film making and other facets of media production. I have worked at film festivals, on film sets, with student film makers and film lawyers! I have also produced and presented the English Language Programme at Radio Nova in Oslo. These diverse work environments have taught me how to be efficient and professional in the dynamic, unpredictable world of film. At 42 Management and Production I have come to see the intrinsic relationship between my studies and film. For example, after reading scripts and evaluating them for the development team, I understood that analysis, succinct writing, confidence with your opinions and a deft understanding of story-telling had all harmonised into a single task. The similarities are numerous, and I am keen to pursue them further. After these experiences I believe I now have the proficiencies to thrive in the film industry, whatever the role demands.
