Although the work I did wasn’t necessary ‘media’ related, it still used a lot of transferable skills, which played to my producing ability. I became a head chef of a hotel in the French Alps, and would be dealing with budgets, timings and managing a team. I was a ranch hand in the outback of Australia working with animals and dealing with a lot of new challenges. I was a sailor and had to learn about nautical charts and the language of the boats.
I believe my ease at being able to talk to a wide range of people from all sorts of backgrounds; an enthusiasm for learning and wanting to experience all life has to offer. Made it possible for me to walk into these new environments and succeed and to gain the respect of these people, because of my genuine interest in them and how they live, combined with a humble approach helped me make many new friends.
Since returning home I have been putting my culinary skills to good use and have been doing chef work whilst I settle back into life here in Manchester and my new house. Feeling a lot more settled and ready for the next stage of my life, I want to re-enter the film and media industry. I did my film and media degree in Sheffield Hallam and then worked at a production house called ‘Centre Screen Productions’ for 18 months, starting as a production assistant and then becoming an assistant producer.
I understand I have been away for some years but I’ve come back with some invaluable experiences that will help me become a better producer.
